The Director-General of the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman visited Channels Television Station on Thursday,14 January, 2021 to throw more light and enlighten the public about the study carried out by the Institute on the Public Expectations of the 9th National Assembly which is expected to feed into the Legislative Agenda of the 9th Assembly and hence ensure that citizens’ input influences legislative decision making.
It also provides useful benchmarks to the public, civil society organizations, media researchers, etc. in assessing the performance of the 9th Assembly vis-à-vis the public at the end of its lifespan.
According to the DG, it is imperative to ensure that Nigerians know what the study is all about, the main issues involved, what the issues are meant to achieve and the modalities for achieving them, knowing fully well the significant role played by the Legislature in a democracy.
"Undoubtedly, the legislators are the representatives of the people, the custodian of the collective will and interest of the generality of the people. Hence, whatever the legislators do must be a reflection of the wishes and aspirations of the people they represent, it is therefore imperative for the 9th Assembly to address the socio-economic challenges that plague the country with the aim of bringing succor to the polity", he posited.
He went on to explain that budget is very critical to fashioning out a formidable economic plan that is sustainable and meets the expectation of the country, and if the country is to get it right, the legislature must be duly carried along and properly involved in budgetary process.
