In view of the low level of women political participation in Nigeria, the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in collaboration with the UN Women Nigeria Country Office is organizing a two day workshop to build the technical capacity of Women Parliamentarians and selected Committee Chairmen.

The workshop, which will hold on 25th and 26th November, 2020 is expected to influence enactment of new gender sensitive legislation and amendment of old laws to ensure the attainment of gender sensitivity which will contribute to promoting gender equality in the legislature and other political and governance institutions in Nigeria.

According to a statement by the Premier Institute, the workshop, which will be preceded by opening sessions will have the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila give the welcome remarks, while the President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan will deliver the keynote address and official opening.

On the objective of the workshop, the statement reads, “To build the capacity of women parliamentarians on legislation, oversight and issue-based gender discourse. To influence the adoption of gender sensitive legal reforms that will lead to the realization of gender equality in Nigeria.

Nevertheless, it would influence the domestication of international and regional legal instruments on gender equality and women empowerment, which will accelerate application of the instruments at national level to promote increased women’s participation in political and decision-making structures as well as build capacity of women and selected male legislators on gender analysis of policies, programmes and gender responsive budgets in the country".
