The Director General, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman received the foremost Nigerian Ambassador to the United Nations and founder of the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari at the Institute on Thursday, November 14, 2019.

The visit was hinged on collaboration between NILDS and the Savannah Centre, particularly in the areas of foreign policy analyses, advocacy for credible elections, training in good governance, transparency and accountability and conducting peace and conflict studies.

In his remarks, Ambassador Gambari implored the leadership of the legislative Institute to explore the uncommon wealth of experience and network drawn from across the globe and in all spheres of life which the Centre parades to boost its image and performance as a critical institution of democracy. "You cannot build a nation in isolation; globalization is real" Gambari said.

Prof. Sulaiman expressed the Institute’s openness for partnership both in entrenching democratic principles, peace and development studies and policy analysis. "There cannot be any serious policy without serious research efforts; here, I also will like the Savannah Center to collaborate with NILDS to x-ray the successes and challenges of the 20 years democratic governance experience of Nigeria.

The DG also informed his guests of the intention of the Institute to establish a 'Democracy Radio' station to effectively educate the Nigerian public on the ethics of democracy and civil obligations, adding that the mandate of NILDS was expanded to include democratic department which paves avenues for engagement with critical actors in a democracy such as the political parties, electoral management bodies, Civil Society Organizations and relevant international development partners.
