The Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman has called for a deeper research into the root cause of insecurity as a way of stemming the tide of insecurity in the country.

He made the call yesterday in his office when he received the founder, Savannah Centre for Democracy and Development, Ambassador Ibrahim Gambari at the Institute in Abuja.

According to him, instead of spending billions on acquiring ammunition for insurgency and other security challenges, millions should be spent on researching the root cause of insurgency so as to proffer efficient solution.

The DG who noted that there can be no meaningful development without peace called on Nigerians to put on their thinking cap to address the country’s developmental challenges as there can’t be any serious policy without research.

He said “we have spent billions in the fight against insurgency but have not spent millions on researching the root causes of insurgency and kidnapping”.

He also decried that the blood, shed in the last 20 years of democracy is more than the Nigeria Civil War, noting that development is still a major challenge to us and we need to X-ray the last 20 years to see how we can overcome our challenges.

Sulaiman also solicited partnership with the Savannah Institute to nurture the country’s democracy, stating that most of the have not been exposed to the workings of democracy.
