Public Perception and Expectation of the 9th National Assembly Takes Front Burner as NILDS Inaugurates Study Team to Carry Out Research

The Director General National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman on Tuesday 29th October informed that the National Assembly has taken active measures to engage more with the public through information provision and involvement in Legislative process among others.

While speaking during the inauguration of the NILDS’ study group on public perception and expectation of the 9th National Assembly, the DG reiterated that the team was put in place to explore the issues around the public expectations of the legislature in Nigeria.

The team, chaired by the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega includes Dr. Peter Siyan of the Economics department, University of Abuja and Dr. Samson Akpati Nzeribe of the International Relations and Diplomacy department of the Baze University, Abuja.

Part of the expected outcome of the team’s activities are:
• To provide a comparative analysis of public expectations of legislature and best practices in integrating them into Legislative work;

• Develop a draft memorandum for transmission to the National Assembly, among others.

The report of the committee which is expected to fit into Legislative agenda of the 9th Assembly will ensure that citizens input exhibit influence on Legislative decision.

The Director General urged them to finish the assignment within 60 days after which the findings will be submitted for onward transmission to the leadership of the National Assembly.

In his response, the Chairman of the committee, Prof. Attahiru jega assured of the team’s commitment in doing their utmost best to assist the Institute as well as meet the deadline.
