NILDS Holds Capacity Building Workshop for Delta State Parliamentary Staff
The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) is holding a capacity building workshop on Parliamentary Management for Staff of Delta State House of Assembly at the training room of the Institute in Abuja. The training programme is aimed at strengthening the capacity of Legislative Officers and other support staff of the Delta State House of Assembly.
Delivering his remark during the opening ceremony, Director General, NILDS, Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman, while appreciating the Delta State Assembly for sending its staff for capacity development mentioned that a strong and effective parliament requires the support of a bureaucracy possessing similar qualities.
“Apart from administering the parliament on a daily basis, the bureaucracy supplies parliamentarians with research and analysis; provides advice on legislative drafting; manages and archives information; ensures that parliamentary rules are respected, amongst other things. To effectively engage these tasks, it is important for parliamentary staff to possess the requisite skills in management and research”, he noted.
Earlier, in his goodwill massage, the representative of the trainees, Mr Uche Nwanze thanked the Institute for the tailor made modules slated for them, which he posited, would reposition them to provide high quality support to their principals.
The workshop will host topics on “Structure, Management and Functions of Parliament; Legislative Practices and Procedures; Committee Systems in Parliament; Law making processes in Nigeria; Parliamentary Communication and Report Writing as well as ICT in Legislative Report Writing”, over a 5 day period.
