Winners of NILDS-FCT 2020 Quiz Competition Benefit from Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman’s Endowment Fund
The Director General, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Abubakar .O. Sulaiman has announced an annual scholarship to sponsor the University education of the winners of the Institute’s Quiz competition for secondary schools on Legislature and Democracy.
He announced this while receiving teachers and students of Government Secondary School, Gwarimpa Estate, winners of the 5th edition of the competition which took place on 28th January, 2020 at the National Assembly, Abuja.
Mbonu Victoria and Anya Nneka Hope, who excelled among fourteen other students from seven schools at the final stage of the competition with 15points will be the first recipients of Prof. Abubakar’s scholarship programme, which will cover their first year tuition as soon as they gain admission into tertiary institutions.
The Director General, said that the gesture was part of major innovations introduced to enhance the integrity and status of the contest as well as motivate students to strive for excellence.
He said that other innovations include expanding the scope of the competition beyond the Federal Capital Territory, first to the 6 states in the North Central and subsequently across the federation.
Abubakar, who presented the students with some publications of the Institute and calendars as well as an undisclosed cash prize, however, said that the educational grants would be redeemable upon presentation of evidence of admission into tertiary institutions.
“This is a significant improvement compared with previous editions. “It also represents NILDS’ commitment towards touching lives of our scholars, while catching them young to instill ethical values and inculcate in them, leadership qualities from a budding stage” he said.
Reacting to the Director General’s gesture, the head teacher in the school, who led the students to the meeting, applauded NILDS and National Assembly by extension for the benevolence.
She said that the initiative will go a long way in molding lives and characters towards the attainment of merit.
NILDS’ quiz competition aims at providing enlightenment, particularly for schools, on the importance, roles and activities of this critical arm of democracy, the legislature as well as broaden their knowledge of democratic processes.
Government Secondary School, Gwarimpa Estate emerged overall winner of the contest with 15 points while Government Secondary School, Karu followed with 12 points and Government Day Secondary School Abaji took the 3rd position with 10 points.
