Chairmen and Members of State Houses of Assembly Service Commissions Get Capacity Building Training from NILDS.

The Chairmen and Members of State Houses of Assembly Service Commission, on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 commenced a 5-Day training Workshop with the objectives of enhancing the conditions of service of Legislative staff as well as strengthening parliamentary administration in Nigeria.
The Workshop, under the auspices of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) is expected to expose participants to series of technical sessions where they will sharpen their skills and experiences particularly in the areas of career development; managing parliamentary relations; roles and responsibilities of Service Commission; financial autonomy for State Houses Assembly implementation; improving parliamentary human resource policies and procedures and budgeting and financial control for Assembly Commissions to mention a few.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the Workshop, the Secretary, National Assembly Service Commission, Mr. Olusoya Ajakaiye expressed appreciation to NILDS for being alive to its core mandates as a training Institute for the legislature. While commending the current composition of the leadership of various State and Federal Organs of the legislature in the country, he urged the participants to seize the opportunity of to exchange knowledge and sharpen their skills for optimum performance in the discharge of their respective legislative duties.

The Director General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, in a keynote address before declaring the Workshop open said the Workshop was timely and appropriate considering the recent Constitutional amendments which granted financial autonomy to State Houses of Assembly. He informed that the Workshop was deliberately designed to equip the participants with knowledge and skills to become more efficient in discharging their responsibilities. He recognized the fact that Assembly Service Commissions compliment the work of the parliament by providing competent and motivated workforce who in-turn offer technical support services that add value and quality to the overall performance of the Legislative Institution.

The DG assured that NILDS under his watch is more than ready to cooperate with the National and State Assembly Commissions towards improving the quality and integrity of Legislative documents and experience. He added that the Institute is prepared to partner with State Houses of Assembly for tailor-made programmes and special training services that will greatly enhance their work output.

Meanwhile, goodwill messages were offered by the Chairmen, State Assembly Service Commission of Bauchi, Delta and Kaduna who were also participants at the Workshop.
On her part, the Chairman, Delta State House of Assembly Service Commission, Bar. Mrs. Josephine Kachuckwu expressed desire for such capacity building workshop to continue on a more regular basis. She implored NILDS to increase its awareness campaign in order to attract more State Service Commissions to be part of such vital training experience which she said is essential for the sustenance and productivity of the legislature in the country.
