NILDS, a Noble Initiative, as Institute Holds 6th Matriculation Ceremony
The Vice Chancellor of the, Prof. Faraday Orumwease has hailed the National Institute for Legislative and and Democratic Studies, NILDS, for setting the pace in terms of manpower development and imparting requisite knowledge essential for leadership effectiveness and quality performance, particularly within the purview of the legislature.
In his opening remarks at the 2018/2019 Matriculation ceremony of the NILDS/UNIBEN Postgraduate Programme which held on Thursday, July 4, 2019, the VC commended the leadership of NILDS and indeed that of the National Assembly for its sustained efforts to prioritize human and institutional capacity building as a panacea to inefficiency, underperformance and weak leadership decisions, not only in Nigeria, but across the African continent.
He added that NILDS obtained its operating license from the National Universities Commission to run the following Postgraduate programmes : Masters in Parliamentary Administration; Masters in Legislative Studies; Masters in Law, (LLM) Legislative Drafting; Masters in Elections and Party Politics as well as PGD in Elections and Political Party Management.
Prof. Orumwease implored the students to preserve the integrity and legacy of the programme that has been established since the inception of the affiliation. He went ahead to admit the 79 students into the Postgraduate school of University of Benin.
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Idris Ahmed Wase who represented the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila at the event also commended both the past and current Directors General of the Institute for persistently ensuring that they keep the Institute on the path of success. He encouraged the students to make good use of the opportunity.
Earlier, the Director General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman who presented the 79 matriculating students to the VC assured that they have met all admission requirements. He further noted that he hopes to see a national spread of the programme, noting that he would endeavor to reach out to States that have not been captured yet in the programme.
The DG informed that the NILDS Postgraduate school has graduated 95 students in various disciplines since inception in 2013.
Prof Abubakar further informed that the Institute has obtained license to run an online diploma program in legislative drafting, which will soon takeoff. He appealed to the leadership of National Assembly to continue to support the Institute, especially in the area of funding that would guarantee the speedy completion of its ultra-modern Permanent site.
To the matriculating students, he enjoined them to play by the rules as the Institute is not ready to compromise its standards.
