NILDS – Expanding the Frontiers for Greater Leadership Efficiency

A Weekly, Leadership and Change Management training programe, is gathering momentum. This is the 4th in the series of NILDS’ 10 week Leadership Training programme, designed for senior and middle level management of the institute. The programme , an initiative of Prof Ladi Hamalai, led management is part of its strategies to up-scale leadership skills, and institutionalize, transformational leadership in the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies.

The training workshop which is consistent with the Institute’s cardinal objectives of supporting the sustenance of a dynamic and effective legislature in Nigeria, provides the opportunity to create a nursery for transformative leadership that would galvanize the staff for better service delivery.

The training programme is a veritable platform for participants to acquaint themselves with emerging leadership trends, understand management skills and strategies, retool, with a view to produce high-impact leaders that would proffer solutions to the leadership challenges confronting institutions.

The Weekly programme which commenced on 10th October 2018 will run till 28th November, 2018 and has continued to attract accomplished and experienced leadership resource experts from within and outside the institute, including Prof Ladi Hamalai, Director General, NILDS, a Professor of development economy and Capacity Development Expert, Dr. Goke Adegoroye, a Public Sector Reform Expert, Dr. Sam Amadi, former Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC and, a Leadership Consultant, Prof. Jega, immediate past INEC Chairman.
Participants have continued to describe the training programme as, an idea whose time has come, noting that, it has been quite beneficial as it prepares them for 21st Century leadership challenges.

The programme has provided broad insights on emerging global trends in management and leadership.

The programme has also been described by resource persons as a highly rated leadership training programme that would not only change but transform the leadership fortunes of the institute, and on the long run, the legislature.

Topics include; Transformational Leadership, Implementing Public Service Reforms, Issues and Challenges of Public Sector Leadership, Strategic Management, Team Building for Public Sector managers, Handling Conflicts, Negotiations, Bargaining, Mediation, Work Ethics and Code of Conduct, Understanding the Role of the Leader and A Model for relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Transformational Leadership in the public sector.
At the formal opening of the training, the DG, Prof. Ladi Hamalai had acknowledged that leadership transcends “positional” leadership; it cuts across all levels and is key to any meaningful development. She stated that her vision is to see the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies translate into a wonderful Institute that would continue to provide solutions, in terms of research output, legislative support services and deepening democratic understanding in the sub region.
