The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) invite submissions to the maiden issue of its NILDS JOURNAL OF LAW REVIEW (NILDS-JLR). NILDS is the legal and policy advisory think tank of Nigeria’s National Assembly established by the National Institute for Legislative Studies Act, 2011 (as amended in 2018). By the new amendment, the institute now bears its current name, NILDS.

The journal is to be published bi-annually (two issues each year) under the auspices of the institute’s Department of Legislative Support Services (DLSS). All submissions should contain original ideas on legislative theory and practice aimed at strengthening legislative capacity/governance for Nigeria’s overall democratic development. NILDS-JLR prioritizes legislative research and practice papers focusing on Nigerian Law, with cross-country/comparative contexts. Research Methodology adopted may be doctrinal, analytical or empirical.

NILDS-JLR will accept only papers which have not been previously submitted or have not been accepted for publication in other journals. Submissions will be acceptable for longer articles (not more than 22 pages or 12,000 words), shorter articles (not more than 12 pages or 5,000 words) including footnotes. Articles may be for legislative review or judicial review of legislation (for longer articles), or book review and issue brief on legislative agenda (for shorter articles). Authors are to comply with the submission guidelines adopted by the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALTS) (Part II, thereof) available at

For clarity, articles must have an abstract of not more than 300 words, maximum of 6 keywords placed immediately at the bottom of the abstract and discussed in not more than six (6) sections (subsection(s) excepted), commencing with an introduction and ending with conclusion. Submissions must be typed in Microsoft Word, 12 font size throughout including title of articles. Footnotes and abstract should be in 10 font size. Times New Roman character must be used throughout including for footnotes. Abstracts must be indented on both sides. Submissions which do not strictly comply with these guidelines will not be considered.

NILDS-JLR does not accept or charge submission or processing fees. Copyrights for all published articles shall be retained by NILDS. Authors shall receive notification of receipt of their submissions. Authors whose articles are accepted for publication will also be notified via email which they are to provide during submissions.
